Reading your meter

Submitting frequent meter readings will help to improve the accuracy of your bills, ensuring that you are paying for the energy you use and don’t get any surprise bill adjustments.

How often should I submit meter readings?

Ideally, you should submit meter readings once every two months via the Just Energy Ireland website, Mobile App or telephone line, so that your bills are always up-to-date. Get into the habit of taking and submitting your readings; each time you do, it will get easier.

Where are my gas and electric meters?

Your electricity and gas meters will be inside a box, located either on the outside of your property, in your basement or under your stairs.

How do I read my meter?

There are a number of different types of meters; here’s how to read them:

Electricity meters

• Single rate meter

If your meter has a single rate digital style meter like this, simply write down the digits as you read them, from left to right. Include any zeros at the start, but ignore any digits in red or which come after the decimal point.

Single rate meter

• Two rate meter

If your meter has two rows of figures like this, it's a 2-rate meter. One set of readings is for your lower priced night-rate electricity - this will be marked 'low' or 'night'. The other is for your day rate and is marked 'normal' or 'day'.

Just write down both sets of numbers from left to right. Include any zeros at the beginning, and ignore any numbers in red or which appear after the decimal point.

For digital style meters, the first reading is usually the night reading – you can check the correct order with a previous bill if you are unsure. Press the display test button until the next reading appears.

• Dial meter

If your meter has dials like this, write down the readings from left to right, including any zeros at the start and ignoring any red dials. Starting with the left most dial first, write down the number that the pointer has just passed.

If the pointer is anywhere between, say, 3 and 4 you should write down 3.

If the pointer is sitting directly over a number, say, 5 and the dial to the right is registering between 0 and 1, write down 5. If the dial on the right's pointer is registering between 90 and 09, it's 4.

Gas meters

• Gas imperial meter

If your gas meter has a row of five numbers like this, write down the numbers from left to right, including any leading zeros but ignoring any numbers in red or which come after the decimal point.

Single rate meter

• Gas digital metric meter

If the row is six numbers long, your have a metric meter. Simply write down the numbers as you read them, from left to right. Include any zeros at the start, and ignore any digits in red or which come after the decimal point.

Single rate meter

• Gas dial meter

If you've got a dial meter, ignore the top set of dials completely. We're only interested in the bottom row. Just write down the readings from left to right, including any zeros at the start. Always write down the number that the pointer has just passed, not necessarily the one nearest the pointer. So if the pointer is anywhere between, say, 1 and 2 write down 1.

If the pointer is sitting directly over a number and the dial to the right is registering between 0 and 1, write down whatever number the pointer is on. If the dial on the right's pointer is between 9 0and 09, write down the number before.

Single rate meter

• Gas electronic meter

These are read in a similar way to digital gas meters. Read one digit at a time and remember to make a note of whether it’s cubic feet or cubic metres. Read from left to right and ignore any red numbers or numbers in a red box.

Prepayment meters

If you have a Pay As You Go meter, you do not have to submit meter readings.
